Hangovers

The Bartending Doctor is dedicating this bartending section to all bartenders who go out after their shift and spend their hard earned tips at another bar and wind up with a hangover the next day and no money.

The Bartending Doctor will also answer the age-old question that customers have been asking bartenders for years: "What's a good cure for a hangover?" Here's a question and answer review that should help you out with these questions.

Q. What is a hangover?

A. First off, it's simply a terrible feeling one gets when you put too much alcohol in your body during a night or day of drinking or partying. Alcohol is a toxin to your body, this helps explain the "buzz" you feel when drinking. Your body is only able to process so much alcohol before it breaks down.

Q. How may drinks does it take to cause a hangover?

A. It depends on your body weight and the amount of water in your body (average person 3 to 6 drinks).

Q. What are the symptoms of a hangover?

A. The most common syptoms are dehydration, headaches, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Q. Can I die from drinking too much alcohol?

A. Yes, so The Bartending Doctor says please avoid any contest that requires you to consume shots, beer, or other alcohol drinks in rapid succession. You will die and well, that's no fun, now is it?

Q. What are the best remedies for a hangover?

A. They fall into two categories: True + False.

True remedies for the morning after a night of heavy drinking:

  • Eat bananas! It replaces the potassium lost to alcohol.
  • Drink a lot of water before you go to bed and when you get up. Non-carbonated sport drinks can also do the trick.
  • Fruit juices help when ordering drinks, at night before you go to bed, and when you get up in the morning.
  • A glass of water in between every drink at night will help slow down the effects of an impending hangover.
  • Eating while drinking helps. Remember putting anything in the stomach prior to drinking helps prevent a hangover. Alcohol affects you more on an empty stomach.
  • Over the counter pills like such as Excedrin and Asprin can help when you have a hangover. Over the counter hangover remedies such as Chaser, Sober, Hangover Stopper, and RU-21 also work.

False Remedies:

  • "Hair of the dog that bit you": meaning drink more of the same in the morning. This is great if you're a drunk, but it really prolongs the inevitable bad feelings. The Bartending Doctor does not recommend it.
  • Black coffee: this actually increases the severity of the hangover, so think twice.
  • Eat fatty or fried foods before you drink: In reality, these will only irritate your stomach in the morning.
  • Burnt Toast: This one was probably created by a bread salesman.

In closing, The Bartending Doctor recommends not to drink more than 1 or 2 drinks as the best way to prevent a hangover. If you have a drinking problem and need help, contact Alcoholics Anonymous.
